What is flash curing?

This was a question posed by a Printwear reader, and here is Kieth Stevens' response:
Flash curing is when you incorporate a heating source into the inline printing process. The heating source can either be an infrared heating element or quartz bulbs. Either way, it is a source of heat that is implemented after first printing down a white underbase on a dark garment.
When we say “flash” it is just that — a flash of heat for a very short time. The flash is not intended to fully cure the ink but to just make it “dry to the touch,” so that other colors can then be printed on top to make them brighter. Usually, the flash temperature for an underbase-type white ink ranges between 180–220 degrees F.
